Athletic performance

Long-term simulation training at higher altitudes improves the overall physical performance of a person who lives in these conditions. It improves the muscle functions such as transport and absorption of oxygen in the body. Due to sleeping, exercising, or intermittent breathing of the high-altitude air, the human body naturally improves its strength, endurance, and regeneration.

Athletes in every field are increasingly aware of the benefits offered by the use of hypoxic systems. They understand the impact it has on their athletic performance, specifically on their strength, energy, and endurance. Combining sleep at normal elevation and subsequent training two to three times weekly at simulated high altitude increases athletic performance to an extent which would not occur under normal conditions. Scientific studies have shown that performance under these conditions will increase rapidly up to about 10 percent.

Moreover, a proper use of hypoxic training increases the way a person carries oxygen into the body through more efficient oxygenation. It leads to natural increase of production of EPO, or erythropoietin hormone, which stimulates production of red blood cells and higher mitochondrial efficiency. All these aspects will facilitate a more efficient production of energy for the use by the body. Ultimately, training in high-altitude conditions allows athletes to better recover from physical exertion, be less tired, and to increase their speed, endurance, and performance.

A typical hypoxic training, which results in increased athletic performance is a combination of sleeping in a hypoxic tent and exercises with hypoxic mask or in a special hypoxic chamber. We recommend sleeping in a tent for at least 14 days in a row at simulated altitudes between 1,500 and 2,800 meters above sea level. It is advisable to combine this sleep with training using a breathing mask or chamber, two to three times a week. Every workout should then last between thirty minutes and one hour at an altitude of about 3,000 meters above sea level. After completion of the hypoxic training cycle, blood parameters, reached by the athlete, will remain at that level for about two months and then they begin to decline.

After seven months of regular sleeping in a hypoxic tent I see a clear training benefit. It really works. Originally, we wanted to use it for conditioning of Nathan for the Hardrock 100-mile race (in the US State of Colorado). However, we are still using it, after we have seen that these methods are really beneficial for the overall health. My resting heart rate is lower, while my oxygen capacity has significantly increased. My body has less fat and I am sure that I have also increased the rate of V02 max (maximum oxygen consumption indicator). Increasingly, we are able to run at a high tempo and still maintain a conversation without being out of breath. During and after hypoxic training, many physiological effects in the athlete's body take place. They result in an increased athletic performance, such as:

  • Increased production of EPO hormone (erythropoietin) which results in an increased level of red blood cells in the human body

  • Reduction of heart rate in both resting and performance modes, lowering blood pressure

  • Improved transport of oxygenated blood to the muscles through the increase of blood capillaries and stimulation of muscle myoglobin

  • Reduction of cholesterol in the body and its transformation into the DHEA hormone (hormone of youth)

  • An increase of growth hormoneImproved function of fat metabolism and reduction of total body weight.

 

The indisputable advantage of hypoxic training is the fact that all benefits and conditions of the body, caused by hypoxia, are long-term. Even after the termination or suspension of use of hypoxic systems the body is still able to benefit from the acquired abilities for a long time.
